Mesothelioma and General Health

Mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, the protective membrane that covers most of the internal organs of the body. About two thirds of cases of the disease mesothelioma begin in the pleural mesothelium of the chest cavity. Mesothelioma can also start in the abdominal cavity and heart.

The main risk factor for mesothelioma is to work with asbestos. Asbestos is a group of minerals with fine microscopic fibers. Because these fibers are resistant to heat, fire, and chemicals and do not conduct electricity, asbestos has been mined and used widely in construction, automotive and other industries.

If small asbestos fibers are released into the air, as they are in the manufacturing process, which can be inhaled or ingested, leading to serious health problems. Up to 70% to 80% of mesothelioma cases can be related to exposure to asbestos at work. There is also some evidence that family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma and asbestos-related diseases, possibly, others. This risk may be the result of exposure to asbestos dust brought home on clothing and hair of asbestos workers. Mesothelioma cases have also been observed in people living near asbestos mines.

Mesothelioma treatments can be divided into two categories: curative, and palliative treatments. The curative treatment is an attempt to eliminate all cancer cells and cure the disease. Palliative treatments are designed to relieve the pain and the patient is more comfortable.

Mesothelioma treatments include conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy and experimental procedures, including immunotherapy and gene therapy.

Generally, a patient with mesothelioma receiving various types of conventional treatments. For example, they may undergo surgery to remove the bulk of cancerous tissue, and then may receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells.

Experimental treatments are generally available only to patients who agree to enter clinical trials. In these cases, patients must have specific criteria to be eligible.

There are five types of mesothelioma. Four of them are malignant cancers, and a condition is benign.

Pleural Mesothelioma: This type of mesothelioma develops in the tissue of the lungs, known as the pleura. It is the most common form of malignant mesothelioma, about 70 percent of cases are pleural in origin.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: This form of mesothelioma develops in the tissue of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneal membrane. Approximately 25% of mesotheliomas are of this type.

Pericardial mesothelioma: This form of mesothelioma develops in the heart tissue, known as the pericardium. About 5 percent of all mesothelioma cases are pericardial.

Testicular Mesothelioma: This is the rarest type of malignant mesothelioma, to date, there have been fewer than 100 cases recorded. Testicular mesothelioma develops in the tunica vaginalis of the testes.

Benign Mesothelioma: The benign form of mesothelioma is commonly develops in the pleura. This is the only form of mesothelioma which healing and recovery is a likely outcome, although it may be a precursor of asbestos-related problems in the future.

A mesothelioma patient is someone who has developed a rare but deadly cancer that occurs almost exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos. A mesothelioma patient developed the disease by inhalation or ingestion of harmful amounts of asbestos fibers into the air.

A mesothelioma patient can develop this cancer in the lining of an internal organ, but usually the tissue of the lungs pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal tissue of the organs of the abdominal cavity of the attacks. When it affects the lung tissue of a patient with pleural mesothelioma may experience difficulty breathing, chest pain and chronic cough, although one patient with mesothelioma, without symptoms for several years.

A patient whose peritoneal mesothelioma tissues of the abdominal cavity are affected can leak, when the swelling of the tissues and fluid. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may not develop for many years, although one patient suffering from mesothelioma pain or swelling in the abdomen, bowel problems, nausea, weight loss, anemia and / or swelling of the feet. Mesothelioma is a cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. Malignant Mesothelioma Treatment There are treatments for all patients with malignant mesothelioma.

Uses three kinds of treatment:

* Surgery (taking out the cancer)
* Radiation therapy (using high doses of X-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells)
* Chemotherapy (using drugs to fight cancer)

Surgery is a common treatment for malignant mesothelioma. The doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue lying around. Depending on how far the cancer has spread, you can also remove a lung in an operation called a pneumonectomy. Mesothelioma is a very painful disease, however, there are some methods that can help relieve pain and discomfort. Examples of mesothelioma treatments for pain management are listed below.

*Acupuncture
Although still not a common practice in Western cultures as a whole, the results show that this type of therapy can have a beneficial effect on the welfare of cancer patients. One study even reports pain average reduction of 36% for those undergoing regular treatments.

*Meditation
This form of pain reduction is clearly cost-effective and allows great freedom for the patient at the time used and the media, as it can be done anywhere once you learn the techniques. The fact that stress reduction is also a bi-product of this therapy is of great benefit to the patient.

*Masseur
This is a form of pain management through which the touch of another brings relief by relaxing muscles and joints and providing a more general sense of peace in the midst of a time trying. Increased circulation also is a benefit and if only for a short time, the effects of this therapy can provide a much needed respite from chronic pain.

*Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy
TENS therapy is administered using electrodes placed at specific points in the patient’s body. The electrodes send a small battery-powered electric shock to the nervous system of the patient who initiates the release of a natural-pain relief. Although some patients have anxiety about using any kind of “shock therapy,” the safety of therapy and shows the lack of side effects make a good pain reliever for those with aversions to medicines forms pain relief.

Palliative care is the assistance to alleviate the symptoms, but is not intended as any means of healing. Generally remain in force after a case has reached a terminal point.

Palliative surgery refers to surgery performed to alleviate some discomfort or pain in an advanced state of cancer. Mesothelioma has spread at this time to an irreversible state and patient comfort during this difficult time is of paramount importance. At this point, virtually all possibility of healing the issue is considered and a pleurectomy (removal of the lungs) can be considered a viable option.

An aid in your breathing can be achieved in some cases by removing fluid from the lungs. This procedure, known as thoracentesis is performed by inserting a needle into the saturated zone and remove excess fluid that has accumulated in the lungs. This may relieve pain and restore a greater capacity for the patient breathing.

Mesothelioma, a disease related to exposure to asbestos is a disease that could be best described by the term “stealth.” You can go to incredible length of time (even fifty years or more, in some cases) and remain virtually undetectable. When symptoms occur, X-rays, CT (CAT) Scans, PET scans, and MRI may be useful in acquiring data for diagnosis. However, even in its advanced degree of dissemination and increased deployment of mesothelial-related symptoms, remains difficult to identify conclusively.

A diagnosis of mesothelioma can only occur after a biopsy, together with the pathological evidence. Other similar tumors and cancers can still be very susceptible to mesothelioma misdiagnosis and only an expert in the field is likely to have the experience and knowledge to make a final assessment.

Studies in the United States, malignant mesothelioma is the most common primary neoplasm of the pleura. But it remains rare in the general population, which are seven to thirteen new cases per million people exposed to factors in this cancer-like asbestos, and it is estimated that may occur one to two new cases per million person exposed to them.

Malignant mesothelioma is characterized by producing nodules, masses, effusions and pleural thickening, unilateral, in which most often is accompanied by an invasion of fissures and at the same lung. A major problem with this neoplasm is the differential diagnosis with conditions such as fibrosis by asbestos, asbestos reactive hyperplasia, lung cancer, pleura and spread to others.

Radiology, topography and magnetic resonance imaging to determine the tumor, but a definitive diagnosis will be determined by pathology.
