The most studied agent is doxorubicin, which has produced partial responses in approximately 15% to 20% of the patients studied. Some combination chemotherapy regimens have been reported higher response rates in Phase II is not extensive. However, the toxicity reported is also higher and there is no evidence that combination regimens result in longer survival or longer control symptoms. Recurrent pleural effusions may be treated with pleural sclerosing procedures, but failure rates are usually secondary to tumor bulk which makes it impossible pleural adhesion due to the inability of the lung to expand in its entirety.

Malignant Mesothelioma Treatment

Surgery is a common treatment for malignant mesothelioma. The doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some tissue around it is. Depending on how far the cancer has spread, it can also remove a lung in an operation called a pneumonectomy. Sometimes it also removes some of the muscle below the lungs that helps breathing (the diaphragm).

Radiation therapy using high energy X-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation may come from a machine outside the body (external radiation) or from putting materials that produce radiation (radioisotopes) into the area where the cancer cells through thin plastic tubes (internal radiation therapy). The doctor may also introduce drugs into the chest through a tube to prevent the accumulation of extra fluid.

Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. These can be taken orally or injected into a vein or muscle. Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment because the drug enters the bloodstream, travels through the body and can kill cancer cells throughout the body. In the case of mesothelioma, a drug may be administered directly into the chest (intrapleural chemotherapy).

Intraoperative photodynamic therapy is a new type of treatment that uses special drugs and light to kill cancer cells during surgery. To do this, is injected into a vein drug that makes cancer cells more sensitive to light several days before surgery. During surgery to remove as much cancer as possible, a special light is used to illuminate the pleura. This treatment is being studied for early stages of mesothelioma in the chest.

Stages of Malignant Mesothelioma

Speaking of Recurrent disease means the cancer has come back (recurred) after it has been treated. May reappear in the lining of the chest or abdomen, or elsewhere in the body.

Mesothelioma Types

Mesothelioma pleural is a type that is associated with lung cancer. It is actually a type of cancer that infects the cells of the pleura, which is the lining around the lungs, forming a thin barrier between them and chest cavity wall. This type of mesothelioma accounts for about 75% of all types of the disease.

Peritoneal mesothelioma is similar to the pleural form of the disease to the extent found in the cell barrier separating the abdominal organs from the abdominal cavity wall. This thin layer of cells called the peritoneum. This type of cancer most commonly leads to cancers of the stomach, throat, intestines and other abdominal cancers. Also called localized malignant mesothelioma.

Stage II malignant mesothelioma

Cancer is found in the lining of the chest wall and lymph nodes on the same side of the chest. The cancer can also be found in the lining of the lung, the lining of the diaphragm (the thin muscle below the lungs and heart that separates the chest from the abdomen) or the lining of the sac that covers the heart on the same side of the chest . The Stage II malignant mesothelioma is advanced malignant mesothelioma.
