Asbestos and Human Carcinogen

Asbestos- Experts predict an increase of respiratory diseases related to asbestos in the coming years, given the prolonged latency of the mineral, up to 20 years, hence the importance of regular health examinations for workers who have been exposed to act on factors such as smoking that can aggravate these diseases

- There is a considerable percentage of occupational respiratory diseases undiagnosed, so that in most cases the occupational respiratory disease is detected at the level of specialized care health services.

- Declared health interest by the Government of Navarra and organized by the Group Erol and the Department of Pneumology of the Hospital Virgen del Camino, the course will include a talk addressed to the general public under Asbestos, Dangerous Neighbor.

Asbestos is among the most important human carcinogen. Overall, it is thought that Spain is the most important occupational carcinogen. Among all agents potentially toxic to the lung is that very important, having referred figures of up to 20% of lung cancer deaths in some populations at risk. Thus, in studies conducted in other countries, like Spain, occupations involving exposure to asbestos (construction, workshops, shipyards, etc.) Have been among the most commonly associated with lung cancer of occupational origin.

Despite the use of asbestos increasingly limited in recent decades, and recently banned in our country (in 2001 the Ministry of Labour and Social Security prohibits the use of asbestos and demolition except in chlor-alkali production), given the long latency existing between exposure to the mineral and the appearance of disease symptoms, up to 20 years, today they are still largely clinical pleural previous exposure and is expected to increase in coming years for certain diseases associated with asbestos.

Lower Cholesterol the Natural way

Varieties of soybeans are used for many purposes.

There are a number of foods that can reduce levels of Low-Density Lipoproptein (LDL), aka bad cholesterol that causes plaque in blood vessels, and increase High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) aka good cholesterol that can be utilized the body to process vitamins are soluble in fat.
To reduce levels of LDL, you should reduce your intake of saturated fat. Saturated fats are commonly found in animal products such as meat, milk, cream, butter, and cheese. There is also a saturated fat derived from vegetable such as coconut milk, coconut oil, and vegetable fat.
But many foods that contain unsaturated fats, so it is effectively lower cholesterol.

Soybeans and derivatives, aka soy that has been processed for example into tofu, soy milk, and soy flour contains isoflavones, a substance that can reduce LDL.
But remember, though delicious tofu and tempeh can not effectively lower cholesterol when treated carelessly. For example, fried or used cooking oil mixed with coconut milk. Because, coconut milk and cooking oil is a source of saturated fat.
Supervisory Agency United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends to consume at least 25 grams of soy protein per day to lower cholesterol.

Nuts are a source of soluble fiber are very high. Consuming soluble fiber can reduce cholesterol. Eating beans such as chickpeas, kidney beans, long beans regularly during the six weeks can reduce cholesterol levels by 10%.

Alternative Treatments

Alternative practitioners may combine conventional serum tests with less conventional tests to assess thyroid hormone function, or simply look at symptoms[citation needed]. Many[who?] have found that compounded slow release T3 used in combination with T4 may help to mitigate many of the symptoms of functional hypothyroidism and improve quality of life, although this is still controversial and is rejected by the conventional medical establishment.

Alternative treatments for hypothyroidism consist of natural food and supplements which aid the thyroid or support the body by giving help where normally the thyroid would. An example of one natural treatment is coconut oil. The use of coconut oil has been proven in clinical studies to increase metabolism. Although it does not directly affect the thyroid, it aids the body’s metabolism which has slowed down due to hypothyroidism.

Therapy for Mesothelioma

A thoracic surgeon performs a mitral valve rep...

During Extrapleural Pneumonectomy, the mesothelioma surgeon will remove as much of the diseased mesothelial membrane as possible, as well as the lung or lung tissue closest to the affected membrane. Even though mesothelioma is not technically a cancer of the lung, it often spreads or metastasizes to the lungs. All (or sometimes part) of the lung is removed during EPP in an attempt to minimize the further spread of the cancer. EPP is often followed by chemotherapy, which may be administered into the open body cavity during surgery. Because it is an extensive and complex operation, EPP is typically performed by experienced mesothelioma surgeons in larger medical centers. Only people who are otherwise relatively healthy and who have one working lung are eligible for the surgery. About ten percent of patients die as a result of complications surrounding this surgery. But for carefully chosen patients, recent studies confirm that EPP offers the best chance of longer term survival.

“Despite having more advanced disease, a subset of patients with favorable prognostic factors can experience extended survival by undergoing trimodality therapy with extrapleural pneumonectomy, chemotherapy and/or radiation,” writes thoracic surgeon and mesothelioma researcher David Sugarbaker, M.D., of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in a recent issue of Expert Review of Respiratory Medicine.

Pleural effusion, or a build-up of fluid around the lungs, is a frequent problem for mesothelioma patients. (Analysis of this fluid is one way doctors may confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma.) Effusion can cause shortness of breath, coughing, rapid breathing and chest pain and pressure. The second most common surgical option for malignant mesothelioma, pleurectomy/decortication, is designed to reduce pleural effusion by removing the diseased pleural tissue that is causing it.

Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer Rates Rise Worldwide

Malignant Mesothelioma, coronal CT scan. Legen...

Although mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer, affecting an estimated 2,000 to 3,000 Americans annually, it is especially aggressive. Pleural mesothelioma (affecting the lining around the lungs) and peritoneal mesothelioma (affecting the lining of the abdomen) are the most common types. All types of mesothelioma are caused by asbestos.

Industries in which asbestos use was once common, including the shipping industry and various construction trades, account for the majority of cases of mesothelioma, which can occur years after the person is exposed to asbestos. Mesothelioma rates on the rise in many poorer nations where lax asbestos regulations and continued asbestos imports (most notably from Canada) continue to put workers at risk.

Mesothelioma is not the only type of cancer that has been linked to asbestos exposure. Inhalation of asbestos has also been implicated in both small cell and non-small cell lung cancers. In 2009, another IARC study published in the British Medical Journal, The Lancet Oncology, linked asbestos to some throat and ovarian cancers. According to the National Cancer Institute, asbestos can also increase the risk for kidney, esophageal and gallbladder cancers.

The IARC study estimates that 13.2 million people worldwide will die of cancer annually by the year 2030. Because asbestos-linked cancers can take 20 to 50 years to develop, mesothelioma and other asbestos related cancers are expected to comprise an increasingly larger percentage of cancer deaths for the next 25 years.

Wrestling With Cellulite

PATTAYA, THAILAND - MAY 15 : Wirittorn Narapa...

Over the years, Vivian Carlson has done everything to stay in shape: she runs, goes to the gym and eats healthily, but has had no luck in getting rid of her cellulite. At one point, she even took a dust buster to her inner thigh, hoping to suck the dimply skin away. ‘I heard about the treatments they give at the spas – this wasn’t so different,’ Carlson said. ‘It’s all suction and massage. Why spend the money on the spa treatments? I thought I was on to something.’ But all she got for her efforts was some red skin. So Carlson avoids wearing dresses or skirts and wears a skirted bathing suit to the beach.

She’s not alone, and that is why the interest in anti-cellulite creams is so strong.

Linda Wells, editor-in-chief of Allure magazine, says the new products claim to help with the appearance of cellulite, and do not say that they can banish it completely. ‘No cream will get rid of cellulite,‘ Wells said. ‘And they don’t really say that they do. What they say is ‘help the appearance of cellulite.” Caffeine is in almost every cellulite-reducing product that shows any benefit, because it helps blood flow to the skin and works like a diuretic, Wells said, adding that it flushes you out.

‘In removing moisture from the skin, it firms it, albeit temporarily.

Retinol is supposed to work by being able to penetrate the skin, exfoliate it, and increase collagen production, which makes skin thicker and hides the dimpling fat. But the question is how much is needed in the products to achieve the effects, because too much can dry out the skin and cause it to redden and peel,

Diseases Caused by Asbestos

diseases caused by asbestos“In the short term, one or two years, can trigger diseases that reduce the breathing capacity,” the pulmonologist Hermano Castro. “This happens due to an inflammatory process.”

“The lung is like a big sponge on the pipes that carry air to the interior. The trachea and the bronchi are the pipes. A sponge or lung parenchyma, are the thousands of pitches, bags, where the oxygen breathing, essential to life, is exchanged for carbon dioxide, garbage produced by the body. The sponge represents 90% of the area of the lungs”, explained the doctor Iolanda Calvo Tiberius, Tenured Professor of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, USP. Asbestos just inflames the lung parenchyma and may cause granuloma. A sponge is very elastic, so that the lungs fill with air and emptied properly. The inflammation, however, alters the tissue, rendering it fibrous. It’s like a scar that forms on the skin when we take a break. The place is harder, with less elasticity. Chronically inflamed may give rise to nodules – the granulomas. “Yet, gradually, the lung loses its ability to expand in an appropriate manner,” continues Castro. The person has shortness of breath, fatigue, cough and phlegm.

In general, after 10, 15 years of exposure to asbestos, fibrosis alters the very structure of the lung. It asbestosis or pulmonary fibrosis. The lung is “harder”, gradually losing its capacity to expand. Causes shortness of breath, back pain, fatigue, weight loss. “There’s no cure, even if the person never comes into contact with asbestos,” says Castro. “Bring slowly to death.”
