Asbestos and Human Carcinogen

Asbestos- Experts predict an increase of respiratory diseases related to asbestos in the coming years, given the prolonged latency of the mineral, up to 20 years, hence the importance of regular health examinations for workers who have been exposed to act on factors such as smoking that can aggravate these diseases

- There is a considerable percentage of occupational respiratory diseases undiagnosed, so that in most cases the occupational respiratory disease is detected at the level of specialized care health services.

- Declared health interest by the Government of Navarra and organized by the Group Erol and the Department of Pneumology of the Hospital Virgen del Camino, the course will include a talk addressed to the general public under Asbestos, Dangerous Neighbor.

Asbestos is among the most important human carcinogen. Overall, it is thought that Spain is the most important occupational carcinogen. Among all agents potentially toxic to the lung is that very important, having referred figures of up to 20% of lung cancer deaths in some populations at risk. Thus, in studies conducted in other countries, like Spain, occupations involving exposure to asbestos (construction, workshops, shipyards, etc.) Have been among the most commonly associated with lung cancer of occupational origin.

Despite the use of asbestos increasingly limited in recent decades, and recently banned in our country (in 2001 the Ministry of Labour and Social Security prohibits the use of asbestos and demolition except in chlor-alkali production), given the long latency existing between exposure to the mineral and the appearance of disease symptoms, up to 20 years, today they are still largely clinical pleural previous exposure and is expected to increase in coming years for certain diseases associated with asbestos.

Health risks of asbestos

There is hardly a health risk when asbestos fibers in single touch. But prolonged exposure to asbestos is very dangerous, regardless of the type of asbestos in question. Why use professionals who often have to deal with asbestos, such as inventariseerders or removers, always wear protective clothing, called Mon suits.
At home and at work

If you are in or around the house found that friable asbestos is not damaged or eroded, you better leave. As long as you do not break the asbestos, sand, drill or in any other way changed is that the safest approach. If you want to remove asbestos, you should always contact your municipality. Some professions can occasionally come into contact with asbestos. Great care is important. Again, not asbestos may be damaged. You should almost never the asbestos yourself.
Kill

Once is not carefully dealt with asbestos hazards. Therefore, according to recent survey in 2028 some 13,000 people deadly asbestos cancer. The peak, about 500 deaths per year, this will occur around 2017.

Diseases

Prolonged inhalation of asbestos can cause various diseases, that may take decades to be felt. These diseases are therefore especially among people who have to often deal with asbestos.

* Lung cancer. The longer one has inhaled asbestos fibers, the greater the risk of lung cancer. Often take a decade or longer, this cancer detected. Especially smoking increases the risk.
* Pleural and peritoneal cancer, or mesothelioma. This cancer is almost always caused by asbestos. Mesothelioma is less common and is often only 30 years or more after exposure to asbestos fibers detected.
* Black lung or asbestosis. The risk of asbestosis increases as the concentration of asbestos fibers was higher, and it has been longer exposed.
* Several other asbestos related diseases.

How are people exposed to asbestos?

People are mainly exposed to asbestos via inhalation of fibers in the air they breathe. This may occur during mining and processing of asbestosinstalling asbestos insulation and for the production of products containing asbestos or . It can also occur when materials containing asbestos older begin to deteriorate. In either situation, the asbestos fibers tend to create a dust composed of tiny particles that can float in the air. In addition, asbestos can enter the body through ingestion, what happens when people consume contaminated food or liquids (such as water flowing through asbestos cement pipes). It can also occur when people cough who have inhaled asbestos and then swallow their saliva. (more…)

Malignant Mesothelioma

MalignantMalignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer is a disease in which cells are cancerous (malignant) in the sac lining the chest (the pleura) or the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum). Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked in places where they breathed asbestos breathing.

You should see a doctor if you have shortness of breath, chest pain or pain or swelling in the abdomen. If you have symptoms, your doctor may send you to do an x-ray of the chest or abdomen.

The doctor may look inside the chest cavity with a special instrument called a thoracoscope. To do this, will make an opening through the chest wall and install the thoracoscope into the chest between two ribs. This test, called thoracoscopy, is usually performed in a hospital. Before the test, be given a local anesthetic (a drug that causes loss of feeling for a short period of time.) You may feel some pressure, but usually no pain. (more…)

Mesothelioma treatment options

Unfortunately, at present there is no known cure for malignant mesothelioma, although several important advances have been made in the form of treatment of the disease. Any prognosis for treatment efficacy and the future of the disease depends on several variables and criteria, including tumor resistance to treatment, tumor cell type, tumor stage and size, and how much the tumor has progressed before detection.

It is also regrettable that the disease is spreading as it does. Mesothelioma is not like many other types of cancer that does not grow in a standard form of tumor. Instead, it extends along the surfaces of organs, cavity walls and blood vessels. This makes the disease more difficult to target and therefore more difficult to treat effectively. Mesothelioma treatment options are relatively limited and currently there is no cure for malignant mesothlioma. (more…)

The Effects of Asbestos on Health

the effects of asbestos on health

The great qualities of the material did, as we have seen, which is widely used, but eventually began to appear the first cases of health problems. One of the early cases identified was the description of asbestosis in asbestos workers in 1898. In 1924 he published the first scientific paper a case of pulmonary asbestosis as early as the decade of 1940-1950 was related to the inhalation of asbestos with pulmonary cancer. In 1960 he demonstrated the relationship between asbestos and malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and peritoneum and in 1982 with benign pleural effusion.

Asbestos fibers can be inhaled through the respiratory system with ease. This makes the fibers can reach the alveoli (in the case of fibers less than 5 microns). The effect on tissue fibers explains the development of lung asbetosis and benign pleural diseases. Regarding the effect of asbestos on cancer development, the theory most widely held is that inflammation caused by asbestos fibers in the lung removed just causing cellular genetic changes needed to develop cancer.

The Asbestos Risk

the asbestos riskWith this post I want to bring awareness of the risks and the measures that the law currently requires to take cover in case your house is made of asbestos sheets, or more generally, if you have detected the presence of asbestos-containing parts of the building (eg, covered shelters, storage tanks, containers, etc. …).

Asbestos is a health hazard because of which it is composed of fibers that may be present in the workplace and life, and unknowingly inhaled. Releasing fibers into the environment can be done either at a physical handling / treatment or spontaneously, as in the case of brittle materials, worn or subjected to vibration, air currents, shocks, etc..

Exposure to asbestos fibers is associated with respiratory diseases such as absestos and malignant tumors of the lung, such as cancer, and serous membranes, especially the pleura, such as mesothelioma. They occur many years after exposure: 10 – 15 for asbestosis to even 20 to 40 for lung cancer and mesothelioma. In flat sheets and corrugated asbestos-cement, often used for roof construction in the postwar years until the ’70s, asbestos is not friable incorporated into a matrix, which, when in good condition, prevents the release spontaneous fibers. After years of installation, however, the covers show a deterioration by the action of acid rain, the temperature changes, wind erosion and plant organisms that cause corrosion with surface outcrop of the fibers and subsequent release of these in the air. The release of fibers in the shell is easily broken at the plates and areas where the cement matrix is corroded.

Mesothelioma Affecting Children

mesothelioma affecting childrenMesothelioma must have drawn your attention as eye-catching headlines. Mesothelioma is drawing attention as flashy headlines. Yet the general mass is not fully aware of this deadly cancer. However, the mass in general is well aware of this deadly cancer.

Mesothelioma cancer makes you its prey when your body has Remained under the influence of environment carrying asbestos fibers in abundance. Mesothelioma Cancer makes its prey when the body has remained under the influence of the environment the performance of asbestos fibers in abundance. The majority of the Mesothelioma patients come from the industrial sector that deals with asbestos manufacturing, mining and shipping yard or even automotive plants. Most mesothelioma patients come from the industrial sector that deals with the manufacture of asbestos mining or transporting garden and even automotive plants. The victims generally are the workers in these factories who often work under unhealthy and unprotected conditions. The victims are mostly workers in these factories, often working in unhealthy conditions and without protection.

File Mesothelioma

file mesotheliomaMesothelioma is a malignant cancer that can start in the cavities of the lungs, heart, or abdomen. This cancer is the direct result of exposure to asbestos disturbance, in which the fibers become airborne. These airborne asbestos fibers can then be easily ingested or breathed in by those nearby that are not using adequate protection. Once the asbestos fibers are housed in the various parts of the body can not destroy the cells of the immune system, which are known as macrophages. Instead, the asbestos fibers lead to scar tissue within the body and this is what can lead to mesothelioma and other asbestos-related injuries.

People who have contracted mesothelioma with asbestos exposure does not not realize that something is wrong for years. The period of latency typical for this cancer is around twenty – forty years, which means that those affected can not find out for three or four decades following the exposure. Further delays may be experienced because of the symptoms of mesothelioma, which are very non-specific in nature – this means they could be easily attributed to other more common disorders. This often leads to a delay in diagnosis, causing further delays when it comes to treating the whole order.

Asbestos

asbestos Asbestos is a mineral fiber commonly used in various construction materials for their insulating and anti-flame

Where is it?
Currently, most products do not contain asbestos. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Committee on Consumer Goods Safety (CPSC) have banned the marketing of various products containing asbestos, and, for their part, manufacturers have agreed to restrict the use of others. Any product containing asbestos must bear a notice that it clearly specifies. However, many building materials and insulation before the 70 contain asbestos. They included the following: insulation for pipes and furnaces, asphalt shingle roof, exterior coverings, cardboard binder, flexible tiles, vinyl flooring, tile adhesives, sound-proof panels and decorative products for patching and adhesives, anti-flame gloves, grips, brake pads and belts, clutch facings and gaskets.

What are its effects on health?
The most dangerous asbestos fibers are too small to be visible. These fibers enter standby when the asbestos material deteriorates or breaks or when it is removed improperly. Once inhaled, the fibers accumulate in the lungs. Inhalation of high levels of asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma (cancer of the membranes of the thoracic and abdominal cavity) and asbestosis (irreversible lung fibrosis that can be fatal). The risk is directly proportional to the amount of inhaled asbestos fibers, the same being greater in smokers. The symptoms of these diseases do not manifest themselves until after many years of exposure to asbestos, being the most affected operators working in contact with high concentrations of it.
