The most common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma is, shortness of breath, chest pain and persistent cough. However, some patients show no symptoms. A common sign is pleural effusion (water on the lungs).

Some symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss, abdominal pain and swelling and intestinal obstruction. If the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, some other common symptoms can include difficulty swallowing, swelling of face or neck, blood clotting problems, anemia and fever.

Also the diagnosis may be difficult due to the nonspecific nature of the symptoms of mesothelioma, symptoms that often seem far less serious diseases.

The diagnostic process usually begins with a compilation of a complete medical history and work history, including any exposure to asbestos. We performed a medical examination and if you suspect a problem call several diagnostic tests. These typically include medical imaging tests such as X rays, CT and MRI, and biopsy procedures that test samples of fluid and tissues by the presence of cancer cells. Diagnostic tests are also used to determine how far the cancer has spread, and if progress has been made elsewhere in the body.

It is the most common form of malignant mesothelioma, about 70 percent of cases are pleural in origin.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: This form of mesothelioma develops in the tissue of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneal membrane. Approximately 25% of mesotheliomas are of this type.

Pericardial mesothelioma: This form of mesothelioma develops in the heart tissue, known as the pericardium. About 5 percent of all mesothelioma cases are pericardial.

Testicular Mesothelioma: This is the rarest type of malignant mesothelioma, to date, there have been fewer than 100 cases recorded. Testicular mesothelioma develops in the tunica vaginalis of the testes.

Benign Mesothelioma: The benign form of mesothelioma is commonly develops in the pleura. This is the only form of mesothelioma which healing and recovery is a likely outcome, although it may be a precursor of asbestos-related problems in the future.

People are mainly exposed to asbestos via inhalation of fibers in the air they breathe. This may occur during mining and processing of asbestosinstalling asbestos insulation and for the production of products containing asbestos or . It can also occur when materials containing asbestos older begin to deteriorate. In either situation, the asbestos fibers tend to create a dust composed of tiny particles that can float in the air. In addition, asbestos can enter the body through ingestion, what happens when people consume contaminated food or liquids (such as water flowing through asbestos cement pipes). It can also occur when people cough who have inhaled asbestos and then swallow their saliva.

Many people are exposed to very low levels of naturally occurring asbestos in outdoor air as a result of the erosion of rocks containing asbestos. The potential for such exposure is greater in regions where the rocks have a higher content of asbestos. After the collapse of World Trade Center building in 2001, generated concern about the presence of asbestos in the dust. Recommendations were made to test and clean residences waste in the area of Lower Manhattan to minimize any risk of such exposure.

However, persons with higher exposure were those who worked in the asbestos industry, such as shipbuilding and isolation. Many of these people I remember working in dense clouds of asbestos dust, day after day.

Family members of asbestos workers are also potentially exposed to higher levels of asbestos, since workers are the fibers home on clothing and can be inhaled by others in the home. The removal of asbestos from homes and other buildings can cause some exposure, but recent workers removing asbestos are trained in the use of appropriate protective equipment to minimize exposure.

Exposure to construction materials containing asbestos is also a concern, particularly in older buildings. If building materials such as insulation, tiles and slabs begin to decompose over time, can be found asbestos fibers in indoor air, which could pose a threat to human health (Environmental Protection Agency, EPA) . There is no risk to human health if the asbestos is bound into finished goods intact, such as walls and slabs. Whenever the material is not damaged or altered, for example due to perforation or renewal, there is no way that the fibers can be released into the air and inhaled. Maintenance workers who sweep and dispose of asbestos dust, or handle damaged building materials containing asbestos are often exposed to higher levels than other occupants of these buildings.

Asbestos can be detected in the water and in air. Water can be released through various sources such as erosion of natural deposits, corrosion of asbestos cement pipes and decomposition of materials containing asbestos roofing, which are subsequently transported to the sewage system.

Although asbestos use has declined in many industrialized countries, its use remains a hazard in other parts of the world. Over 70% of world production of asbestos is used in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia.

The mesotelium (composed of mesothelial cells) is the membrane that lines three body cavities, and depending on the cavity that is lined is assigned a specific name: the thoracic cavity (pleura), abdominal cavity (peritoneum), and bag the heart (pericardium).

The mesothelium that covers the internal organs is called visceral mesothelium, while the coating on the body wall is called the parietal mesothelium.

The mesotelium tissue also surrounds the male internal reproductive organs and covers the internal reproductive organs in women.

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer of the mesothelium, in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide uncontrollably. They can invade and damage tissues and organs. Most cases of mesothelioma rises in the chest cavity (pleura) or the abdominal cavity (peritoneum)

Approximately 2000-3000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year in the United States, covering about 3 percent of all cancer diagnosis. This cancer occurs four times more common in men than in women. Any form of mesothelioma is fatal, with the exception of benign mesothelioma. The prognosis for mesothelioma is almost always poor and most studies report a median survival of less than a year, but the outlook really depends on how early the diagnosis is made and if it aggressively.

The occupations with the highest risk are workers in shipbuilding and in the heating industry. In the physical examination, a damping of the lung are found due to the moisture. About this area of damping is less breath sounds heard. Sometimes the tumor through the chest wall outward growth.

On lung fluid and swelling can picture the lung membranes seen. This is almost always unilateral. A CT scan of the chest gives better information at the tumor in the lung membranes is. Importantly, pathological examination to determine whether this moisture or changes in the lung membranes based on a truly malignant mesothelioma. Therefore, the moisture and a piece of the lung membranes examined. This can be done by a needle through the skin to absorb some moisture. Typically, this fluid a bloody appearance. The piece is a blind pleural biopsy done through the skin or through a keyhole surgery (thoracoscopy).

These studies done to diagnose malignant mesothelioma and to secure to the extent of the tumor to determine in relation to possible treatment. After this, a conservative ruling on life expectancy. Because of the far-reaching implications of the diagnosis malignant mesothelioma and the difficulties in correctly interpreting the histological findings, a national body (the mesothelioma panel) that derived tissue co-evaluate and likely to reveal the likelihood of a malignant mesothelioma. Capturing the extent of the tumor is done using the T (for tumor size and location), N (for all lymph nodes are affected or not) and M (metastasis to other organs) status. On this basis, a structure created in four stages.

A (malignant) mesothelioma, also known as pleural cancer, is a specific lung cancer, caused by the inhalation of asbestos. Asbestos fibers are inhaled and lodge in the lung membranes. There they stimulate the lining cells and ensure they change such that these cells into malignant tumor cells change.

A malignant mesothelioma is a cancer of the serous membranes. Usually this means the lung membranes, but occasionally the peritoneum (10%) or the pericardium (less than 1% of cases). It is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos and particularly to crocidolite. The asbestos fibers of this type are long and very thin. After these fibers are inhaled deep into the lung and the lining cells are capable of serous membranes (mesothelial cells) so as to provoke genetic changes that occur and disturbances in cell division, which ultimately degenerate into malignant cells. Under normal circumstances, these cells die off. By the specific genetic changes and the resulting inflammatory response stimulate cell growth, these cells can survive and become malignant, however. A virus may play a role in the development of malignant mesothelioma. In the Netherlands every year 400 new cases of malignant mesothelioma for. Only after 2018 will decrease the number of new cases. This decrease is due to the asbestos decision, allowing use of asbestos in the Netherlands is prohibited.
Based on histological features four distinct types of malignant mesothelioma. The epithelial, the sarcomateuze, the desmoplatische and mixed (epithelial and sarcomateus) type. The latter type is the most common.
At the moment mesothelioma in the Netherlands as an occupational disease for which compensation can be obtained. The Institute of Asbestos Victims mediates herein.

Malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer is a disease in which cells are cancerous (malignant) in the sac lining the chest (the pleura) or the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum). Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked in places where they breathed asbestos breathing.

You should see a doctor if you have shortness of breath, chest pain or pain or swelling in the abdomen. If you have symptoms, your doctor may send you to do an x-ray of the chest or abdomen.

The doctor may look inside the chest cavity with a special instrument called a thoracoscope. To do this, will make an opening through the chest wall and install the thoracoscope into the chest between two ribs. This test, called thoracoscopy, is usually performed in a hospital. Before the test, be given a local anesthetic (a drug that causes loss of feeling for a short period of time.) You may feel some pressure, but usually no pain.

The doctor may look inside the abdomen (peritoneoscopy) with a special tool called peritoneoscope, which is inserted into an opening in the abdomen. Usually, this test is also carried out in the hospital. You are given a local anesthetic before performing the test.

If abnormal tissue is found, the doctor will remove a small piece to be submitted to an analysis by microscope to determine the presence of cancer cells. This process is called a biopsy. Biopsies are usually done during the thoracoscopy or peritoneoscopy.

Your chances of recovery (prognosis) depends on the size of cancer, its location, how far it has spread, the appearance of cells under the microscope, how the cancer responds to treatment and patient age.
