Asbestos and Cancer
Asbestos causes several diseases, including cancer – that knows almost everyone. The asbestos fibers are so dangerous because they – like almost any other fiber split – lengthwise and not break into small pieces . The thin fibers are therefore also able to pierce the cell walls of the alveoli and the pleura should be fixed. The resulting cancer there is called mesothelioma (Rippenfellkrebs).
There are three diseases caused by asbestos
* Asbestosis (asbestos dust lung)
* Mesothelioma (Rippenfellkrebs)
* Cancer (lung cancer)
By inhaling asbestos dust is the big people in quantities of asbestos dust lung (asbestosis). The irritative effect of the mass in the lung fibers and their existing heavy solubility in body fluids cause this is expressedCell damage. Medically is a fibrosis (fiber stress) of the lung and pleura (pleura). Also, after a long professional exposure caused lung cancer. The risk is higher by a factor of 5 than in the general population. Smoking increases the risk individuals in containing asbestos to lung cancer in order to factor of 10
In contrast to asbestosis can mesothelioma (pleural) and lung cancer caused by small amounts of asbestos. For this reason, the limits are set deliberately low. These cancers arise in part for over 15 years and some after very long latency.
The trade associations say why a further increase in asbestos-related lung and Rippenfellkrebs – Diseases to advance in the years 2010 – 2020. Cancer caused by asbestos is also difficult to diagnose. Persons of professional asbestos should therefore contact the doctor to point out. The cost of treatment contribute to the work-related professional associations (BG). This requires that the suspicions of insurance are displayed. This informs the BG, which can then examine the suspicion of experts. Recognition by the BG but says nothing about the expected amount of pension. If the damage to the lung is not high enough, usually only a small pension or no pension is paid (say with full lung function). 950 people have died in the year 2000 to asbestos diseases. 457 000 persons who had contact with asbestos, are maintained in the lists of BG’en. For the U.S., with annual mortality figures from 2000 for asbestosis, 4000-6000 expected to asbestos-related lung cancer and mesothelioma for 1200-2000.
The problem therefore has dimensions that will only take effect today in the whole extent of days. Asbestos is today we are the leading cause of occupational mortality.
